Bob Godfrey’s Great was the first British animated film to win an Academy Award Oscar back in 1976.
The film takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the life and career of Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, set to songs in a music hall fashion. In 1976 it went on to become the first short animated film by a British director to win an Academy Award Oscar®
After the film was initially completed in received distribution in cinemas alongside feature films, but was never released on VHS, DVD or any other home formats. We are glad to announce that as of 2017, Great is available to buy as a Digital HD download.
You can buy the film through Vimeo on Demand.
40 Great Years
In 2014 Bob’s eldest grandson, Tom, started making a documentary to celebrate the 40th anniversary since Great was completed. The documentary takes a look at the techniques and methods involved in the 4 years it took to complete.
Editing began in late 2016 and the finished documentary will be included with all Digital HD downloads of Great.
